May 1st marks the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the New Group, a special interest group within Alcoholics Anonymous dedicated to serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community. Established in 1972, New Group is New York City’s first “Gay” special interest group officially recognized and listed in the NYC AA meeting list.
From its inception, the New Group has provided a safe haven for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, embracing AA’s foundational principle that all are welcome. Initially meeting in various downtown Manhattan locations, New Group now holds meetings at Saint John’s Church, situated just steps away from the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village.
In the early years of AA, the absence of consistent LGBTQ+ meeting listings in regional, national and global AA directories posed obstacles for newcomers seeking a supportive environment. However, through perseverance and consensus building among AA members special interest groups like New Group began to be recognized first locally with NYC Intergroup in 1972, and then in 1974 a vote to officially list gay groups in the world wide AA directory.
Today, the LGBTQ AA community thrives, with thousands of members worldwide and numerous meetings, retreats, and conferences fostering growth and fellowship. Reflecting on our history, we recognize the pivotal moments—from Dr. Bob’s welcoming of a gay alcoholic in the 1930s to Bill W.’s advocacy for special interest groups in the 1940s, and countless other members who got sober and made space for everyone.
As we honor our past, let us reaffirm our commitment to AA’s core principles, cherishing the Third Tradition: “The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking,” and embracing our Fifth Tradition: “Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.”
Together, let us continue to uphold the principles of unity, recovery, and service, ensuring that every individual finds a place of belonging and support on their path to sobriety. By staying sober, carrying the message we commemorate 52 years of the New Group’s invaluable service to the LGBTQ+ community.
